Top 6 Trends in 2020 to Make Your Wedding Authentically “You”
It’s a new year and a new decade; time for some new trends to make your wedding all about you!
Couples in 2020 are radically transforming the wedding landscape as the latest trends reinvent the ideal image of the perfect wedding. We’re seeing an overall shift away from the traditional. Instead, there’s a focus on incorporating personalized elements into your wedding for a unique experience to remember. We’re seeing a change on the horizon and we love the view. Here’s what to look out for as you plan your upcoming nuptials.
1. Sustainability
2020 is seeing a tidal wave of couples looking to decrease or eliminate the carbon footprint of their wedding. There are numerous simple ways to cut back your environmental impact. When choosing a florist, couples are asking for no floral foam to be used as it contributes to micro plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways. Some couples are even opting to reuse, or “up-cycle,” bouquets and floral arrangements as a way to be financially and environmentally responsible (it’s a win-win). Dried flowers, a previously taboo floral choice, are coming up in a big way as they adorn bouquets, tablescapes, adding texture and flair to decor. Keep an eye out for sustainable options for your wedding’s food and paper products. Locally grown and sourced in-season food (and vendors that provide them) are key to making your wedding long-lasting in memory, not on the Earth. Consider recycled paper and soy based ink for your invitations, save-the-dates, and menus. If you’re very dedicated to the cause, a romantic and savvy idea is to reset an heirloom stone into a new setting as a wedding or engagement ring. Sustainability is chic and it’s here to stay.
2. Food and Beverage Stations
Guest food and drink experiences are one of our favorite ways we see couples personalizing their weddings in 2020. Family style dining is out, signature cocktail stations are in. This year will see interactive food and drink installations scattered at receptions that speak to your story as a couple while feeding your guests’ tummies and souls. Try a taco wall where you ring a bell and tacos appear (yes, it’s really a thing), opt for a table featuring your favorite liquor (gin, vodka, tequila) with a variety of mixers and accessories, or hire your favorite local chef to serve up your favorite dishes. The ideas are endless. This is a trend about including your guests in on your inside jokes and tastes. Feel free to have fun and be daring!
3. 90’s Nostalgia
The average age of a person getting married this year is 33—that’s a whole lot of 90’s babies getting hitched. This year, we’re seeing wedding elements that evoke the 90’s, from Lisa Frank decor to neon and holographic stationery. As an added childhood throwback, bouncy houses not unlike those at the birthday parties of our youths are inflating at wedding receptions all over (and let’s be honest, they’re super fun). Some couples are even opting for a bounce house first dance! 90’s music, neon lights, and laser light shows will entertain and invite your guests to keep it moving all night long.
4. Inclusivity for All
Couples in 2020 are going out of their way to make weddings more inclusive for every guest. More and more menus are including options for food sensitivities and personal preference, from lactose intolerance to nut allergies and vegetarianism to veganism. Consider mocktails for your non-drinking friends or sugar-free dessert options. A favorite inclusive approach of ours is the abandonment of the traditional bridal party. A lack of a bridal party makes the wedding about all of your friends and family, not about choosing your favorites to stand at the altar with you. These 2020 trends say “We love you all and are so thankful that you joined us.”
5. Micro-Weddings
Let’s talk small and intimate—we mean like 40 people intimate. There is nothing more personal than just a few friends combined with a great night or weekend, so why not apply the approach to your wedding? This trend of 40-or-fewer attendee weddings focuses on making the event small but grand. Couples are upping the price per person so they can really focus on giving their guests a wedding experience to remember, whether locally or at a special destination. As an added bonus, micro-weddings can also tie in to the trend towards sustainability—fewer attendees, lower footprint on the environment. Micro-weddings will give you more opportunities to connect one-on-one with your friends and family while celebrating your special day.
6. Go Bold or Go Home
If you’re an extrovert, this trend is for you. Bold and bright color palettes are central to the latest trends and are a wonderful opportunity to infuse your personality and preferences into the wedding. Take your favorite color and make it a focal theme—not just an accent—with vibrant tablescapes, stationery, accents and even food. Don’t stop at color; go for over-the-top opulence with your dress as dress trends lean towards puffy sleeves and dramatic ball gown skirts. Forget the sparkler send-off and set off fireworks instead. Go for the loudest and boldest patterns you want, because 2020 is the year to be boldly true to yourself.
