3 Ways to Include Your Pet in Your Wedding

With each passing year, more and more couples are choosing to include their pets in their wedding day. And why not? Pets are just as much a part of the family as any other relative or wedding guest. It’s not always an easy task, so we’ve compiled some great ways to incorporate your pets into your big day.

1. Include Them in Your Photos

When pets are family, it’s only fair that they’re part of your family photos. Pets can be featured in engagement or wedding portraits and it’s a wonderful way to commemorate your pet’s importance to you and your partner. Make sure that you inform your photographer before your shoot if you intend to include your pet. They will need to be able to prepare for the extra variables that come with photographing pets, as well as brainstorm the best kinds of shots for your particular pet. 2. Include Them in The Ceremony

There are a lot of factors to consider before doing incorporating your pet in your ceremony, such as your pet’s temperament and comfort. If your venue allows pets and your pet does well with new surroundings and people, then you can include them in the ceremony itself. Your pet can take over the classic roles of Ring Bearer and Flower Girl, or even be the Pet of Honor and take their place at your side during the ceremony. But remember, don’t give your pet ring bearer the actual rings—no matter how well-mannered your pet is, you don’t want to risk your wedding bands!

Have a larger pet, like a medium or large dog? Consider strapping on an action camera to film your day from your pet’s point of view. Is your pet smaller, like a kitten or hedgehog? You could place them in a decorative carrier and carry them instead of a bouquet down the aisle.

Note that if you decide to include your pet in the actual wedding day, be sure to inform your guests. This will manage expectations so there are no surprises, as well as inform those who may have allergies to your pet so they can prepare accordingly. It may also be wise to hire a pet sitter to manage and care for your pet during the festivities so you can celebrate without the additional stress of ensuring your pet has all their needs met.

3. Include Them in Spirit

Sometimes it’s just not plausible to have your pet in-person on your wedding day. That doesn’t mean they can’t still be included. You can still feature their likeness or portrait on your Save the Dates or Wedding Invitations; this works particularly well if your pet is included in engagement photos. You can also choose other artistic nods to them in the décor and signage at the ceremony and reception—or perhaps even have a cardboard cutout of them in attendance! Even if your pet is unable to attend, your love for them in you and your partner’s life can still be present.

The possibilities are endless, but what it all comes down to is knowing your wedding and knowing your pet. Always check with vendors and staff to make sure your pet is allowed, and then make sure you check with your pet. Your pet is family and not an accessory, so make sure to do what’s best for them first.
